Mumble is a penguin.

Unlike other penguins, Mumble has no singing voice to speak of. Most penguins sing, and the more beautiful their voice, the more attractive they are to others. It's also how they succeed; it's what their classes are in at school, how they graduate, how they attract a mate. A penguin finds their identity in their 'heartsong', the song they hear deep within themself before they share it with the world. Mumble, unfortunately, makes sounds that, according to one penguin "sound like this one animal but then they rolled it over and it was dead." The thing about Mumble, though, is that he can dance.

Mumble leaves Michael Flately in the dust. He makes Ricky Martin look like an amateur. Fred Astair would be left staring.

...if only the other penguins considered dancing a valid expression of heartsong, his life would be a lot easier. Problem is, even his own father doesn't. Thus Mumble is something of an outcast, despite his bravery, his friendliness, and his amazing dancing skill.
